Obi-Wan Kenobi (Part 1 and 2)

Okay, so I have to start by saying I am INCREDIBLY bias when it comes to Star Wars. Whether it’s the originals, the prequal, the sequel, live action, or animated, I am a fan. I’m enthralled as long as there is lightsaber, the force, a space battle, or a shootout with some stormtroopers. Disney’s newest Star Wars installment is the long-awaited return of Ewan McGregor in Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show takes place 10 years after the tragic events we saw in Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan is in hiding on the planet Tatooine trying to keep an eye on kid Luke while avoiding the jedi hunting inquisitors. Unfortunately, Obi-Wan is faced with a task that will draw out of hiding and force him into the open.

The Good

I feel like just saying “it’s Star Wars” would not be a good enough explanation of just what this show gets right.

First good point, I really the direction the show seems to be going with the story after the first 2 episodes. When we got the first trailer for the show, I wondered how the story would develop. I knew that we couldn’t have a whole mini-series about Obi-Wan, hiding in a hole, fighting the bad guys that find him. Using Leia was a genius move. In A New Hope, Leia has R2-D2 to get Obi-Wan since he was “her only hope”. Maybe we are beginning to see the events that led Leia to know that in her greatest time of need, Obi-Wan is the man to help.

Another point that I have loved about these first two movies is the writing. I think this is best seen in the child Leia character. Vivien Lyra Blair does a great job taking the lines that were given to her and really bringing them to life. We can see the boldness of Padme, but also that spontaneity and stubbornness of Anakin. She does a great job acting mature for her age, while still repeatedly reminding us that she is just a kid.

The Bad? (More like ponderings)

It’s tough for me to find “bad” points of the show so far. Maybe that we haven’t seen an epic lightsaber duel? I was kind of shocked that we didn’t get to see a fight with the Grand Inquisitor and felt that was a missed opportunity.

Instead, I think that these first two episodes have simply helped the audience develop so many questions. Why is Reva after Kenobi like a dog after a bone? Does Owen ever change his opinion of Kenobi? How will Obi-Wan cope with the realization that Anakin/Darth Vader is alive? Again These are not necessarily “bad” point, I’m sure most or all of these will be addressed over the next 5 weeks.

My Overall Opinion

Star Wars = Happiness

If you like Star Wars, you have already watched the first 2 episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi. If you LOVE Star Wars, you have probably already watched theses episodes more than once. So instead of me telling you to watch them, tell me what you think of these first 2 episodes. What are your thoughts? What are your theories for the coming episodes? What complaints do you have?
