The Crow (2024)
The Crow (2024) is the latest remake to hit theaters this weekend. Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are violently murdered when the demons of Shelly's dark past come back to haunt them. Given the opportunity to save his beloved by sacrificing himself, Draven returns from the grave to exact brutal revenge on those responsible, navigating both the worlds of the living and the dead in his quest for justice.
What follows is The Good, The Bad, and NO Spoilers of The Crow (2024).
The Good
The Crow (2024) delivers action sequences that were previously unattainable in the original film due to limitations in special effects and CGI. The scenes depicting Eric's quest for vengeance are as intense and brutal as one would expect from a man seeking justice for his lost love. Bill Skarsgård delivers an outstanding performance as his interpretation of Eric Draven.
The Bad
Before proceeding, I would like to preface that I have a deep appreciation for The Crow (1994), which may have influenced my perspective. The Crow (2024) offers a reimagined take on the original story, retaining key themes such as vengeance for a lost love while introducing significant alterations. One major critique is the film's attempt to portray Eric and Shelly as soulmates, transcending mere romantic love. Despite dedicating considerable screen time to developing their relationship—far more than the original film—this connection still feels insufficiently earned.
Another significant criticism I have is that, aside from the character names, there are few, if any, callbacks to the original film. I found myself waiting for a line such as “It can’t rain all the time,” which, even if brief, would have added a layer of appreciation and homage to the original.
My Overall Opinion
I give The Crow (2024) a 4 out of 10.
